Portraits

Peter’s forte is portraits. People are what he cares most about. He made the definitive portrait of old friend Roger Deakin, framed by splashes of cold water.

He captures the zany Python in Terry Jones, renders Seamus Heaney luminous and shows the depth of Salman Rushdie. He catches the love between Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson, the comic menace of The League of Gentlemen and the humanity of John Prescott. He shows a youthful Johnny Depp as surly but already self-consciously gorgeous. He reveals the humour in the serious work of sculptor and good friend Laurence Edwards.

He frames writer and academic Malcolm Bradbury in his home library. He sees the moment a pensive Robert Altman strokes his goatee. Peter’s wife and muse Joao stars in some of his most creative portraits.
